Every train ticket has a 10-digit PNR that allows travellers to check PNR status before boarding. It helps passengers know the exact live status of their train. Sometimes, travellers book a ticket but receive a waitlist list number and not a confirmed ticket. You can also check out the status here to know whether the ticket is confirmed.
PNR refers to “Passenger Name Record”. It is a unique identification number that helps passengers to find their train status through train tickets. On board, it allows the train in charge to ensure the correct number of passengers. These PNRs are valid for one year and expire after the journey is complete. This information is maintained by the Centre of Railway Information System (CRIS) along with Live train PNR status and availability of berths in all classes for the next 60 days. These PNRs are allotted to all passengers who have booked a railway ticket online or offline. Through the PNR number, one can access the traveler's details including their name, age, and gender.

The PNR usually contains every detail about the passengers travelling including name, age, sex, contact details, travel agency, payment information, travel destinations etc PNR allows passengers to check whether the tickets are confirmed on the waiting list. It also holds information like seat allocation details, coach, and seat number. In case of any change of plans, passengers can use the unique number to know the PNR status through various channels, i.e., online portals, mobile apps, and even a toll-free number.
PNRs are also helpful in the process of cancellation and refund policy. Passengers can simply cancel their train itinerary by using the PNR number and receive refunds as part of the cancellation policy.
